Demarest students thrive in an atmosphere that is rich in educational opportunities. Toward the goal of meeting our mission statement, the children receive a well-balanced education that meets the requirements of the New Jersey Department of Education. Mastery of the basic skills of reading, writing, mathematics, science and social studies are stressed throughout all grades. Additionally, students in all academic areas receive instruction in the use of technology that will provide them with the ability to gather, evaluate and present information. Classroom experiences are student centered and designed to promote critical thinking, effective communication, and problem solving. Moreover, it is our goal to convey positive attitudes toward life-long learning that will ensure that our students are provided with the skills to succeed at future challenges.
The learning community at Demarest School is comprised of dedicated and nurturing
teachers and administrators. With the assistance of specialists in a variety of subjects and disciplines, students have the opportunity to participate in a well-rounded instructional program that includes art, vocal music, instrumental music, physical education, enrichment, world languages and library science. Students are supported as needed, by a full-time nurse, a Child Study Team, guidance counselor, resource center, basic skills program, and an enrichment program. Additionally, community resources are utilized when appropriate to further enhance the Demarest School curriculum. Law enforcement personnel conduct a D.A.R.E. program (Drug Awareness and Resistance Education) and a local supermarket conducts a Young Consumers Program to provide practical and hands on activities to develop and utilize math skills.
Demarest students have numerous opportunities to participate in extra-curricular activities including sports programs, lunch enrichment magnets and a K-Kids Club, a community service organization sponsored by Kiwanis International. Throughout the year, K Kids participate in several activities to learn the importance of positive activities on behalf of those in need. In addition, a character education program and peer mediation program, developed in conjunction with UMDNJ, reinforce Demarest School’s social 3R’s: Respect for Self, Respect for Others and Responsibility for All Actions.
Finally, an active and involved Home and School Association works to provide Demarest students with additional opportunities to learn and succeed. Demarest School is a learning community involving many partners working to make certain that our students have the best opportunities possible.
The success of our students and our school is dependent on the support and participation of our parents and guardians. Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns you may have.
